Sergeants Lead the Way

This leadership guide is intended to provide current and future police supervisors with the key elements and strategies of practical frontline leadership that I learned in the complex environment of a modern police agency. The chapters are short by design, providing those lessons of being a Sergeant that I did not see presented in the college management and supervision courses I have taken. Those courses offered valuable information that is beyond the scope of this work, however those courses focused on administrative functions, not the nuts and bolts of leadership. 

 I have intentionally avoided lengthy studies of the subjects involved, hoping to distill the fundamental lessons of leadership for the police Sergeant that I learned while on the job. Some of these lessons came from making mistakes, some lessons by watching others work, and some lessons were learned by surviving the near miss of a catastrophe.
